Treasure Island is the first "Simultaneous Strategy" game.
It combines the intensity and unpredictability
of "real time" strategy games with the "go
at your own pace" and control
of "turn based" strategy games. Both sides move at the same time,
but they can only move one person at a time. You can pause or modify the
game speed at anytime.
Although there is gobs and gobs of action, chases and combat, no one gets killed, and there is no blood. TI is great for all ages!
- GOAL -Your team lands on a treasure island
and attempts to find the buried treasure chests and get them back to one
of your ships. Of course, a Pirate team has also landed on the Island,
and is determined to get the treasure chests back to their ships first.
There are multiple treasure chests on each island, and you must get more
than half of the the treasure chests to your ships to win.
- PLAY ACTION - Naturally, this leads to
conflicts when the pirates try to capture your men, or you try to capture
them. These conflicts are resolved by sword combat, which is composed of
a series of dueling episodes, each of which can result in you capturing
the pirate, or the pirate capturing you, or a draw. And the dastardly pirates
can attack you and steal the treasure chest as you carry it back to the
ship (and you can do the same to them!)
- TEAM COMPOSITION - Your team ( and the
pirates team) is composed of 5 distinctly different types of players :
Scout, Trapper, Runner, Fighter, and Swordsman. Each individual has various
degrees of special skills such as vision, sword fighting, speed, stamina,
stealth, etc. The name of your team is NAVS (short for navigators) and
your team color is blue. Your opponents are called PIRATES and their team
color is red.
- TEAM GROWTH AND COACHING - After winning
the first expedition, you are given the opportunity to pick one new player
to add to your team. In addition, you get to coach each of your team members
in the attempt to increase one of their skills. In this way, you can build
an awesome team as you progress through the sequence of expeditions, and
the makeup and temperament of the team will reflect your coaching style.
Of course, the pirates are also increasing and coaching their teams.
- MERCENARIES - Whenever you find a treasure,
you may also find from one to two "RUBIES", each of which you
can use at any time to hire an awesome mercenary to help you win that expedition.
Choose you time carefully because you only get to use the mercenary during
one expedition. Of course, this is true for the pirates also.
- PLAYER ACTIONS. Each player can run, walk,
crawl, stand, dig, defend, or attack. These actions have an impact on vision,
stealth, and energy consumption.
- COMBAT STRENGTH - This is a dynamic number
that is is used to determine your chances of winning combat, and is based
on the player's sword fighting skills, energy level, confidence, and team
- ENERGY - Each player starts fully rested
with a full "tank" of energy. But, when the player goes into
action, energy is consumed, affecting his speed and combat strength. For
example, when a players energy level is at 50%, his combat strength is
also cut to 50%.When his energy is exhausted, he cannot move or attack.
(and is a sitting duck!). Whenever the game is not being paused,
every player's energy is being replenished until it reaches full, so you
can see that energy management is an important strategy.
- VISIBILITY - As each expedition starts,
the island is blacked out except for the terrain that can be seen by the
team members. In addition, 3 or more red "X" marks that identify
the general location of the treasures are visible as well as all of the
ships. As your team explores the island, more and more terrain is revealed.
In the Professional version, the team whose scout occupies SPYGLASS HILL
can see all of the terrain of the island and any opponents that are in
- TERRAIN. There is a wide variety of terrain
on the islands, such as meadows, trees, bushes, swamps, streams, lakes,
large rock hills, etc. Each type of terrain influences how far the players
can see, and how much energy the player expends passing through it. It
also affects how fast the players move.
- TREASURE CHESTS - In the shareware version,
there is one treasure buried in only one of the 8 squares surrounding the
RED X markers, always in the the same spot, however in the PROFESSIONAL
VERSION the treasure is randomly located adjacent to the RED X markers.
- PIRATES - The pirate team is, of course,
controlled by the computer program, called artificial intelligence, or
AI. In order to prevent predictability, a tremendous effort was put in
to create a wide variety of strategic and tactical options from which that
particular pirate captain can choose.
- TUTORIAL SCREENS - You are given the option
to view a series of tutorial pop-up screens that occur in context as you
play the game.

detailed set of help screens that will enable you to learn the game and
